Zero Waste Life

After finishing this module, including watching the YouTube video about a young woman who chose to live a ZERO WASTE life, consider your household waste stream.
Are there changes that you might be able to make in your life to live a zero waste life and enter your thoughts/ideas into your blog.

  • I was so surprised from the very start of the movie.  I couldn't believe that her waste could all fit into one mason jar.
  • The speaker even said that quitting plastic and all other waste isn't so easy, .  I would agree and that is probably the biggest reason why making changes would be so difficult for me.  It can be time consuming, and requires more consciousness of my actions.  I also live with my parents so I think a lot of change would also need to come from them if we wanted to get closer to a zero waste life.
  • Things that I do already that she mentioned, but I could do more of is shopping at the farmers market, buying second hand clothing, and trying to live a minimalistic life by really taking care of the things that I already have.  We have a really big farmers market that is only a five minute drive from me.  The only problem with this is I can only go one of the days that they are available.  I also already buy a lot of second hand clothing and I sell a lot of my clothes to stores that take gently worn clothing.  I do this to save and make money.  I also have moved a number of times so over that time I have tried to only hold onto the things that I need.  Those things I do take really good care of as well because I have to stay strict with my spending.
  • What I could do more of is making more of my own products.  I think it can actually be fun to start making some of my own products because as she said, you can change the scent and ingredients to how you like it.

Jillian- It is very time consuming to have a zero waste life. That is great you buy and sell second hand clothing and try to shop at the farmers market. I think that living in the Bay Area we are a lot less wasteful than other parts of the country and we probably do more than we give ourselves credit for. Making your own personal products is also a great way to reduce waste, and like you said it could be fun.
