Ideal chemical policy

After watching all of the provided videos and reading material blog about what you think is essential for an ideal chemical policy and then elaborate on one of the elements from a public health protection perspective.
  • I think it is essential for an ideal chemical policy that the weaknesses in the current policy are identified and broken down to find out what is working and what isn't.  I also think there needs to be more regulations around protecting the public and having the publics best interest in mind.  I feel that there needs to be more of a push for adequate protection around chemical exposures, especially given the amount of research that exists around the topic.  There needs to be more transparency for products on the market so consumers are more educated on the products that they are buying.  There also needs to be a reduction in the competitive marketing of chemicals and industry interference.
  • From a public health protection perspective, the transparency about the chemicals in products on the market would be very important.  I say this because consumers can have a lot of power over the products and the market.  Companies will continue to produce the same harmful product if people continue to buy them; however the consumers are buying with a lot of misconception and lack of knowledge.  If people knew what they were really buying and make changes to their behaviors they have a change of changing the demands of products.  If products are favorable as is, then the producers may make changes that appeal to their audience more, which in this case can be cleaner healthier products.

Jillian- Pesticides. Agreed! There needs to be more regulation on pesticides and wasn’t it alarming to find out all the potential chemicals in our food!? Policy Reform. It is so important to oppose the interests of the chemical producers. It’s so true that there needs to be more transparency in products and the chemicals they have. I also agree that if the population knew about this there would be more of a demand for change.
