Use of antibiotics

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE 101: HOW ANTIBIOTIC MISUSE ON FACTORY FARMS CAN MAKE YOU SICK

  • I find the concept of antibiotic resistance interesting.  The fact that people are getting sicker from infections and it could require multiple rounds of stronger and stronger antibiotics to stop an infection could have more implications than just the issue of antibiotic resistance.  For instance, like the reading mentioned, it can be harder for doctors to treat patients with allergies and you also have to consider the cost.  If people are requiring more rounds of medications, that costs money and for some people that can be a big barrier.

NEARBY LIVESTOCK MAY RAISE 'SUPERBUG' RISK

  • I work at a hospital and I commonly see patients who come in with MRSA.  They usually get this from one of their previous medical procedures and hospital stay.  Fortunately the area that I work in doesn't have livestock and I believe the areas with livestock close by are in Marin and Santa Cruz.  I think if we lived closer to areas of livestock that seeing MRSA due to animals would be more common.

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER THAT ANTIMICROBIAL WIPES AND SOAPS MAY BE MAKING YOU (AND SOCIETY) SICK

  • I feel like this article goes back to finding out what is in the products that we use on a daily basis.  I use different soaps, wipes, and hand sanitizers but I never take a second to look at what is actually in it.  I am guilty of using wipes to clean everything at work and constantly rubbing hand sanitizer all over my hands because I was always told this will prevent the spread of germs and keep you healthier.  Now with the results of this study it puts it into a different perspective.

A REPORT ABOUT THE NEW PRACTICE OF INCORPORATING ANTIMICROBIALS INTO THE MANUFACTURE OF HOSPITAL FURNISHINGS

  • I think after reading this I believe it is so important that people are educated about incorporating antimicrobials into the manufacturing of hospital furnishings.  I think there is a lot of information that can be overwhelming to people who don't know about the issue.  This article is good because it does provide suggestions for health care, manufacturers, and the research community.  I think there should be continued research and results should be made public.  I think there are some larger asks of health care such as examining the antibiotic stewardship programs in the communities and I think this requires a commitment from facilities and organizations to be more aware.
