Industrial Farming

Blog about:
  • Your thoughts about the vanishing of bees (what else have you heard/seen about this issue?)
    • I didn't really know that this was an issue, nor did I know about the impact that it can have on the whole food supply.  Every time I eat something I don't take the time to recognize what had to happen for that to land on my plate, but it is important to recognize that bees do play a large role.  What is surprising to me is that there is evidence that this issue is because of pesticides, and other disease threats that are impacting the bees.
  • Dirt!: The Movie
    • One note that I got from the movie was that the importance of healthy dirt.  I don't think many people take the time to consider the health of dirt, but for some people it is such a prized possession.  I can see how this makes sense now that I actually think about it because when we buy plants they don't do well in our yards, but at my grandmothers home in Milpitas it seems that they have much healthier dirt and they are able to grow plants and vegetables so much better.  I also thought it was interesting that in our homes most of the time we clean up and try to keep amy dirt out of the home, whereas there are entire homes made of dirt.  I find it is interesting how this is utilized and seen so differently in different cultures.
  • Were you able to discover if there is a factory farm near you? Were you already aware of farms near you? What do you think about this?
    • According to the map, there aren't any factory farms in San Mateo County.  It looks like one of the closest is in Marin County and Santa Cruz County.  I am not surprised to find this out because I don't know where it would be place anyways.
  • Composting: Do you currently compost? Have you composted in the past? Do you know anyone who composts? Would you consider composting, after learning about its benefits from the movie?
    • My family used to compost in the past.  I don't do it aside from at work where they try to compost as an organization.  I would consider composting because of the benefits, just right now it is a little inconvenient and that makes the difference for me of doing it or not.
